Fire Captain Shanley has been a San Diego Fire-Rescue Department firefighter for 23 years. He currently serves as the City of San Diego’s first full-time Recruitment Officer. His firefighter duties include a focus on recruiting women and people of color to serve as firefighters with the San Diego Fire Department. He is also responsible for creating and managing the budget, building and maintaining community relationships, managing staff, and developing programs that bring greater awareness to underrepresented communities in our city.
Captain Shanley’s dedication and service to his family and community after work hours are remarkable. He is a pastor, a dedicated husband of 27 years to his beautiful wife Marla, a father of 2 beautiful daughters, 1 in college, studying Social Work, and 1 who recently graduated from The Howard University School of Nursing.
Along with his career, Capt. Shanley is a criminal justice reform and social justice advocate. He founded Building Justice— a highly successful re-entry program to reduce recidivism within communities of color and prepare community members for careers in construction trades. He desires to abolish the prison industrial complex and use his influence to create space for
marginalized community members.
